Where to head for the best vegetarian brunch in Leeds

Who doesn’t love brunch? I just love how indulgent it is to go out and have someone else make you breakfast in the middle of the day. Of course, you could make brunch at home, but who wants to do that? Instead, saunter on down to some of these joints, serving up some of the best vegetarian brunch in Leeds.

I know, I know, brunch purists may say that brunch ain’t brunch without bacon, but I think they’re missing the point. Eggs florentine, avo toast and bircher meusli are some of the best brunches around (and if you want your fill of hangover-fixing, food-coma-inducing downright dirty brunch, look no further than my sister’s patented 8-hashbrown-and-cheese butty – totally gross, totally worth it and totally vegetarian).

So, grab a book or a bunch of friends, order a large pot of coffee, and have a spot of vegetarian brunch in Leeds.

    1. Roots and Fruits

      Grand Arcade, Leeds, LS1 6PG

With an all-day brunch to rival any other, including scrambled eggs, vegan sausages and chipotle beans, Roots and Fruits gets bonus points for having options for a totally vegan brunch and a totally gluten-free brunch too.

    2. Global Tribe Cafe

      18 Swan Street, Leeds, LS1 6LG

Like Roots and Fruits, Global Tribe Cafe serves up only vegetarian food, meaning that everything on their breakfast menu (served until 13:30) has a place on this list. Featuring a veggie full English, the vegan Tribe Breakfast (fried aubergine + scrambled tofu + avocado + Mexican beans + cashew cream? Yes please!), as well as lighter options, like super-muesli or toast, PLUS offering gluten-free bread, Global Tribe Cafe is a mecca for vegetarian brunch in Leeds

    3. Nichols Deli

      68A Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton, LS7 4LZ

Another totally vegetarian place, in Chapel Allerton, Nichols is open all week until 4, and serves breakfast and brunch dishes all day. Hyde Park Book Club opened its doors on the site of the old garage on Headingley Lane a few years ago and serves up an eclectic events calendar of music, comedy and spoken-word, alongside a vegetarian food food menu. With breakfast dishes served until 5pm, uncluding eggs on toast, avocado bagels and granola with yoghurt, Hyde Park Book Club is perfect for a late-in-the-day vegetarian brunch in Leeds.

    2. Inkwell Arts’ Cafe

      31 Potternewton Lane, Chapel Allerton, LS7 3LW

Based outside the city centre in Chapel Allerton, Inkwell’s Cafe is volunteer led, 100% vegetarian, and only open on Saturdays. Serving up a breakfast menu, including eggs or mushrooms on toast, American-style pancakes, and eggs florentine until 11:30, accompanied by arts and crafts sessions and live music, this is the most entartaining vegetarian brunch in Leeds. The Inkwell centre also supports Mind, the mental health charity, so by choosing to visit the cafe, you will be supporting a really important cause

    3. Grub and Grog Shop at Sheaf Street Cafeteria

      3 Sheaf Street, Leeds, LS10 1HD

Formerly based at Northern Monk, Grub & Grog know their (veggie) stuff. In a twist to regular labelling, everything on the Grub & Grog menu is vegan, unless otherwise stated, and locally sourced – most dishes can be made gluten-free too. With an extensive and seasonally rotating breakfast menu served until 4pm, the bracing walk out beyond The Tetley to Sheaf Street is absolutely worth it (and will wake you up, if nothing else!)

egetarian places in Leeds for Brunch

    1. Caravanserai

      1 Crown Street, Leeds, LS2 7DA

Not many people know that Caravanserai, the North African street-food joint just behind the corn-exchange, serve up breakfast dishes too. Everything on Caravanserai’s breakfast club menu is vegetarian, and treats like brie + homemade salsa, zait + za’atar and one of my all-time favourite vegetarian brunch dishes shakshuka, make this a vegetarian brunch in Leeds not to be missed.

    2. Mrs. Atha’s

      Central Rd, Leeds LS1 6DE

Mrs. Atha’s is dimly-lit, high-ceilinged coffee shop, full of mismatched vintage furniture. They have a super-cool, warehouse vibe, and welcome laptop-wielding workers, and chatty groups of students, alike. Though not totally vegetarian, Mrs. Atha’s offer a great veggie brunch selection, plus gluten-free bread, for the likes of me.

    3. Wappentake

      92 Kirkgate, Leeds LS2 7DJ

Situated on Leeds’ oldest street, Wapentake is one of the businesses bringing new life to the Kirkgate/Markets end of Leeds. Serving up brunch, beers and everything in between, Wapentake offers vegetarian brunch options like egg + avocado sandwiches on their home-baked, artisan bread, with gluten-free options available too.

    4. Bundobust

      6 Mill Hill, Leeds, LS1 5DQ

The award-winning Bundobust is another ‘must-visit’ for Leeds vegetarians. We all know the drill: The most delicious vegetarian Indian street food alongside a great range of craft beers, served up in what is still one of the coolest spaces in Leeds. If you time it right (12-4, Saturday and Sunday) you can grab an Egg Bhurji with a Red Snapper (a gin-based Bloody Mary) for a tenner. Egg Bhurji isn’t gluten-free or vegan, but plenty of other menu options are.
