Choosing a name can seem both trivial and crucial.
It feels trivial because, of all the things that could stall a business or a blog, the name shouldn’t be the problem. Surely its what you do with it that matters?
Picking the right name though can feel absolutely crucial. The name is, after all, a focal point of your brand, and something you’re likely to be seeing, hearing, writing and saying pretty much constantly over the next few years.
If you have a good idea of your business or blog name already (and especially if you’re already running a food business in some form), choosing a name for your blog shouldn’t be an issue – skip straight down to the section on choosing (and securing) your domain.
Here are some tips and ideas for choosing (and securing) a name for your food blog):

Tips on Choosing a name for your food blog
If you don’t already have a food business or a blog name that you’re planning to use, you also need to come up with the actual name.
Now, I don’t claim to be the best at naming things. Look at this blog, I literally just used my own name (#lazy).
But if you need some ideas, here’s how I’ve gone about picking blog names in the past:
- Brainstorm a few words that describe the essence of your blog. You need to be more specific than just ‘food’. Ask yourself a few questions to come up with specific words:
- Will you blog about food that part of a particular diet or lifestyle? (vegan, vegetarian, paleo, low-carb, low-fat, zero-sugar, etc.)?
- Will you blog about food from a particular cuisine? (Indian, Polish or Mexican, for example)?
- Will you write and develop recipes for a specific meal or way of eating (like desserts, quick meals, sous-vide recipes, or using only 5 ingredients)?
- Will you combine your food writing with another topic (travel, photography, fitness, parenting and gardening could all fit well with food blogging)
- Who is your ideal audience? (are you writing for busy mums? Millennial travellers? Sports buffs?)
- Once you’ve got a good idea of your topics and audience, grab your thesaurus and add in more synonyms and others words related to your topic (for example, if you’re writing about Healthy Mexican food, you could add words like ‘wholesome’ and ‘nutritious’, or add the name of the city where you got your inspiration, as well as the country)
- Add in more foodie words, that conjure the essence of your blog idea. If you’ll be writing about home-cooked meals, words like ‘home’ or ‘kitchen’ could work, or if you’re writing about nutrition for runners, adding words like ‘sneakers’ or ‘miles’.
- Here’s the fun part: start playing around with the words. Combining two or three into a short phrase (like “Oaxaca Kitchen”, “Tasty for Miles” or “Delightfully Paleo”). You could even write some of your favourites out on post-it notes and physically move them around on the wall until you find your favourite combination.
- Once you’ve found a name (or a few – its good to keep an open mind at this stage) it’s time to find your domain name.
Tips on picking the domain for your food blog:
What’s the difference between your blog or business name and your domain name?
There doesn’t have to be any difference at all.
My actual business name is ZoePicburn.com and my domain URL is (you guessed it) ZoePickburn.com. For blogs and businesses, domains are typically along the lines of ‘YourBusinessName.com’, but they don’t have to be.
Whats the difference between a domain name and a URL?
While the two are often used interchangeably when discussing website names there is a technical difference between a domain and a URL. According to the big G (that’s Google, not God):
- “Simply put, a domain name (or just a domain) is the name of a website. It’s what comes after “@” in an email address, or after “www.” in a web address.”
- Whereas “A URL (aka “Universal Resource Locator”) is a complete web address used to find a particular web page. While the domain is the name of the website, a URL will lead to any one of the pages within the website. Every URL contains a domain name, as well as other components needed to locate the specific page or piece of content.”
So ZoePickburn.com is my domain, and https://zoepickburn.com is the URL of my homepage. https://zoepickburn.com/LINK is the URL for this page.

When you’ve got a blog or business name, its time to choose a domain.
Choosing a domain name largely depends on availability. - Keep it simple – if you can, choose ‘YourBusinessName.com’ as your
- If the ‘.com’
versionis unavailable, try changing the TLD (top-level domain – the ‘.com’ portion of the URL).
For example to the ccTLD (country code top-level domain) specific to your country – so ‘.co.uk’ for businesses in the UK, or ‘.ca’ for businesses in Canada (see a full list of ccTLDs here)
Another option is to use a gTLD (generic top-level domain) like ‘.net’ or ‘.biz.- just be aware that the use of some TLDs is restricted (like ‘.gov’ ‘.edu’).
- If you’ve got your heart set on a .com, you could always try adding a descriptive word to the business name.
For example, this could be ‘BusinessNameRestaurant.com’, ‘BusinessNameLondon.com’ or ‘FoodByBusinessName.com”.
You could even add something like “WeAreBusinessName.com” or “GetYourBusinessName.com” if it makes sense with the name and the brand.
- Before you decide on a domain, write it out as one word and say it aloud a few times.
It may sound trivial, but this is a name you’re going to have to write down and say quite often – you want it to be simple, easy to understand, and free of any unfortunate double meanings (like these)
- Make sure to check the history of your domain. A domain may have belonged to someone else before you, and they could have been using it for pretty much anything. I use the free WayBackMachine at Archive.org to see previous incarnations of any URL.
How to buy a domain name for your food blog
- Buy your domain name as soon as you’ve decided on it (especially if you’re setting up a site quickly) as domains can be sold to anyone at any time.
Itsnot unheard of for a domain you’ve searched to be bought by someone else, who may try to sell it back at an inflated cost.
Search in incognito mode to be extra careful, and buy your domain as soon as you’ve made the decision.
